Preventing Snags: Mounting GPS Trackers on Short-Legged Breeds

The Danger: For a Lab or a Husky, a dangling tracker is a non-issue. For a Dachshund with 2 inches of ground clearance, a dangling tracker is a trip hazard that can snag on roots, brambles, or even tall grass.

  • The "Top-Mount" Rule: Never hang a tracker from the D-ring like a traditional ID tag. It will bounce against their chest and get caked in mud.

  • Use Rubber Clips: Trackers like the Tractive Mini come with rubber clips that thread the harness strap through the device. This keeps it flush against the dog's shoulder blades.

  • The "Saddle" Position: Position the tracker exactly between the shoulder blades. This is the highest point on the dog's body, providing the best "line of sight" to GPS satellites while staying as far from the mud as possible.
