Training Your Dachshund to Use a Ramp safely

The Goal: To protect the spine, we must replace the "leap" with a "climb." Dachshunds are smart but stubborn; forcing them onto a ramp often backfires.

  • Days 1-2 (The Flat Surface): Lay the ramp flat on the carpet. Do not lean it against the sofa yet. Lead your dog across it with high-value treats (chicken or liver). We want them to love the texture of the surface.

  • Days 3-4 (The Small Incline): Prop one end of the ramp up on a low cushion or a few books. Continue the treat-leading. If they try to jump off the side, gently block them and guide them back to the center.

  • Days 5-7 (The Real Deal): Place the ramp against the sofa. Put your dog halfway up the ramp so they only have to take two steps to get to the treats. Gradually move them further down until they are doing the full length.

Expert Tip: Never use "lure" training with a collar. Always use a harness so if they slip, you have a safe way to support their weight without straining their neck.
